Busting those exercise myths

Be it cardio, weight loss, or muscle gain related – there is a lot of incorrect gossip going on in the workout world… It’s time to squash the fitness fibs!

Myth #1: The longer you exercise, the more weight you’ll lose

Untrue! It’s all about working smarter, not harder. Pounding the pavement for hours on end makes you more injury prone than a quick 30-45 minute high intensity workout, and can burn just as many calories. Why not try a HIIT class at your local gym, or an outdoor bootcamp? Not only will you it leave you sweating, but you’ll meet lots of fitness fans too.

Myth #2: Weights make women bulky

Absolutely not. Females have a completely different genetic make-up to men and, without getting into the science of it all, in a nutshell, it’s a huge battle for females to increase our muscle mass. Our hormones just don’t allow it. Also, weights play a significant role in body fat reduction as help to increase your metabolism – cardio is not your only fat loss friend.

Myths #3: Sit ups make six packs

Yes, sit ups are fantastic to strength your abdominal muscles, however shrinking the area around your stomach to show off that toned torso really comes down to diet. Remember to include lots of green vegetables and protein in your food plan – and skip that extra scoop of ice-cream.
